Special Care of Grocery in Covid Time

The novel corona virus is not thought to be transmitted via food - but it can stay on the surface for several days, including the packaging material for foods. The higher risk though comes from being in close contact with other people - while food shopping or receiving a food delivery.


General Food Hygiene Tips


1. Remove any unnecessary packaging and dispose into dustbin with lid, packaging like cans can be cleansed with disinfectant before opening, wash your hands with soap and water immediately.

2. Use separate chopping boards to prepare meat and fish.

3. Wash unpacked produce like fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water with a soft brush. Most of the dirt, pesticides and germs are washed away in this manner. Fruits and vegetables should not be washed with soap and detergent, as it penetrate inside.


After washing them in water, you can soak them below mentioned disinfectant solutions.


a. Vinegar, In bucket [2 liters of water] add half a cup of vinegar [white vinegar] and 2 tbsp of salt. Acetic acid in vinegar possess germ fighting abilities, it effectively eliminates 90 - 95% germs.

b. Lemon juice + Salt, 4 tbsp of salt to 1 glass of lemon juice, in 2.5 liter of water, soak for 10 - 15 minutes and then run under running water. The juice have mild bleaching properties and high citric acid content. It is a natural cleanser for fruits and vegetables.

c. Baking Soda, the fine grainy texture makes it exceptional abrasive, Mix 1 Tsp Baking Soda in warm water and place fruits and vegetables in it. This will clear all bacteria and pesticides on it.

d. Potassium Permaganate, soak a pinch of potassium permaganate in 2 liters of water and soak fruits and vegetables for 10 - 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. This is very effective in washing away germs, bacteria and pesticides.
